What is Altitude Sickness?

Also known as soroche, it's the body's reaction to lack of oxygen at high altitude locations. Cusco is at 3,400 masl.

Common Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite

Prevention

Before Arriving:

  • Arrive to Cusco from Lima (better than from altitude)
  • Consider spending the first night in Sacred Valley (lower altitude)

Upon Arrival:

  • Rest the first day
  • Stay constantly hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals
  • Eat light and frequently

Natural Remedies

Coca Tea: Traditional Andean drink. Drink it all day. Muña: Aromatic herb that helps with digestion. Chamomile Tea: Soothes the stomach.

Medication

  • Acetazolamide (Diamox): Prevents altitude sickness
  • Ibuprofen: For headache
  • Portable oxygen: Available in hotels
